Clinical Application of Renal Volume Measurement on Abdominal CT Using Digital Image Processing

Abstract
To measure renal volume, normal kidneys in 100 persons on abdominal computed tomography were extracted in a single slice using the character of pixel distribution of the kidney and removal of residual noise using batch processing with folding method. Determined volume by this digital imaging processing was compared with volume calculated by manual method. The volume difference was less than 7 % on non-enhanced CT, and less than 5 % on contrast-enhanced CT. Our method on abdominal computed tomography was convenient and useful for automatic segmentation and volume determination of kidney. Our method is a simple, convenient and practical technique for the measurement of kidney volume. Further clinical application in various clinical fields is expected.
